BREAKING 70
Welcome to our breaking 70 page!  You're an accomplished player who tends to make a lot of pars with a few more bogeys than birdies.  You tend to have a couple of shots here and there that destroy your chances for a 69.  Mental focus and consistency are most likely your demons.

We are not going to talk about swing path or arm angles.  We will leave that to your local teaching professionals.  This page is dedicated to the mental side of the game, short game fundamentals and putting.  The goal is to get you to start thinking about a plan to shoot 69 and lower.

MISSION 69:

The chuckles from the junior high kids aside, many very solid golfers believe they can go this low.  You may know the tour isn't calling your name, but if you can shoot a 69, it would be one great milestone to surpass in your golf life.
  • Obviously you are a very good player and most likely score in the 70's pretty consistently.
  • To shoot 69, one must score a bare minimum of 34 on one side and 35 on the other.
  • Must be locked in on all facets of your game and in the zone.
  • You will need to hit fairways and greens all day long, all day strong.
  • Positioning on the fairways and greens will be paramount to avoiding hazards.
  • Since you're going to need at least 3 birdies, you'll need to manage the course well.  Attack the easy pins and aim for the center of the green for the harder flag positions.
  • You'll need to be solid with your putter, and your total putts for the round will have to be in the upper 20's to low 30's.  That is if you're getting almost all pars.  You can two putt every green for par except 3 that need to be 1 putts for birdie.  With every bogey that number goes up.
  • On a par 72 course, you will need to birdie 3 of the 18 holes and par the rest.  If you want to cheat a little, find a par 70 course.  Then all you need is one birdie and the rest pars.  The difficulty is usually that means two par 5's are missing from a standard course and those are usually good chances for birdies.
  • If this seems daunting, it shouldn't.  You usually make pars anyway, thus it requires maintaining your focus, executing a game plan and capitalizing on your opportunities.
  • Don't take a shot off mentally.  A bogey or higher can destroy your chances.
  • Have expert knowledge of the course you're playing.  Knowing where every bump and nuance from tee box to green will serve you well.
  • If you're not a casual observer checking out this page for giggles, then we wish you the best in your quest for an excellent round of golf.
Mission accomplished?

We're not naive enough to think that after reading this section that you'll go out and shoot 69 today or tomorrow.  But hopefully with some luck, you'll have a chance to reach your new low.  Use our forum to discuss what others are doing in their quest.  And, if you do card a number in the 60's, please come back to our forum to tell us all about it. We love a great success story.

Good luck and may pars be plentiful and the bounces be kind!
